Every year over 1200 artists pass out from various art colleges, they come out with a passion for art and dreams in their eyes. They have risked family pressures and have embarked on the journey to be an artist. They soon get tired and disillusioned taking rounds of galleries, barely 10 of them strike it lucky because of talent or just pure luck, the rest fade away into oblivion as they do not have the financial strength to carry on.
They give up their dreams to take up small jobs and there dies the most magnificent talent. When in college, artists are exploited for money, their work is taken away cheap and most of them take loans and give away their best works for little money. Bestcollegeart.com believes that all of us are always learning in our lives and hence always in the college of life. So artists no matter when they passed out are always more then welcome to post their 5 best works on the website and reach out to collectors. We are not a website of students in art college, on the contrary most of our artists are much older and the median age is close to 30.
Artists should just be creating art and not worrying about their next meal! Bestcollegeart.com was founded by collectors,artists and important gallery owners to provide an equal opportunity platform for all artists, so that their dreams can live on. People can buy reasonably priced art without fat commissions and artists can price transparently in addition to being paid on time.
Bestcollegeart.com also strives to be a hot bed for all the top gallerists and collectors for spotting the top talent. Art Collector Kapil Chopra set up this art initiative to provide dignity and equal opportunity to young artists. Colloborating with Peter Nagy from Nature Morte and Collector Swapan Seth, they try and bring the best of Indian Contemporary art to collectors at reasonable valuations below Rs 99,000.
“The Present is Now” curated by Peter Nagy was a runaway success and one of the artists, Paribartana Mohanty who not only sold all his works before the exhibition opened, also won India’s top art prize “Emerging Artist Award 2010 from FICA”. In addition to this, 80 % of all the works were sold in less than 3 hours.
We followed it up with a second exhibition “Collective Metamorphosis” curated by Kapil Chopra and featuring the works of 5 promising artists at India’s most influential art gallery, Nature Morte in July 2011. More than 70% of the entire show was sold out in less than a month showing that great art priced at the right levels will always have collector interest.
Please note that all money earned by selling art is invested back into developing basic infrastructure like running costs of this platform, organising gallery exhibitions,art initiatives and marketing this website. The advisory board mandates that no money earned from this initiative will be spent on anything else or taken out for any personal gain, it is all for art and all to be invested back into growing this institution.
