About Aruna Rao
A painting is a world of its own. It is a process of creation and subject to manipulation. I am excited by this fact because the possibilities are endless. To me, the everyday spaces are narratives. They have an intrinsic poetic quality about them. If I were to write a description about that very image that I was painting, the instances and objects placed would evoke subtle emotions. It is a play of psychology, the whispers of the subconscious and the unconscious. While my eyes see, my heart senses. And thus my hand picks up a colour in response. While the selection of the content is sought to seek solace, the application is similar to capturing a fleeting moment. Thus, the strokes run on the canvas. The atmosphere of a space then, guided by exaggerated colour swatches, pops open a visual to me that is exciting and stimulating.
Just as spaces are narratives, people are personifications of moods. As the Indian Scriptures state that we are always in a state of experience, that is, we are always emoting a bhava (which if heightened will bring us to a state of Rasa), I find that each part of a person suggests a mood or a character of its own. The form of a structure also emotes. Everything is an expression. Everything has a voice. And to be able to capture that expression, that tone, and the nuances of character, allows me to play with the math of art.
