About Nature Morte
Started by artists Peter Nagy and Alan Belcher, Gallery Nature Morte was a fixture in New York's East Village art scene from1982 to 1988, where it became know for exhibiting works by seminal artists (Vito Acconci, Keith Sonnier, Richard Pettibone), artists whose works defined the 1980s (Sherrie Levine, Louise Lawler, Ross Bleckner, Allan McCollum) and young artists who went on to make important contributions (Robert Gober, Haim Steinbach, Gretchen Bender, Clegg & Cuttmann, among many others).
Having moved to India in 1992, Peter Nagy resurrected Nature Morte in New Delhi in November, 1997. Since then, Nature Morte has become synonymous in India with challenging and experimental forms of art: championing conceptual, photographic and installation genres within a commercial market that remains deeply conservative. Concentrating primarily on the works of Indian artists, Nature Morte was the first to exhibit many Indian artists who have gone on to garner international acclaim such as Subodh Gupta, Dayanita Singh, Anita Dube, Bharti Kher, Raqs Media Collective and Thukral & Tagra. In partnership with the New York gallery Bose Pacia, Nature Morte has been the first gallery from India to participate in many of the world's top art fairs, including Art Basel, Art Basel Miami Beach, The Armory Show in New York and FIAC in Paris. In November 2008, Nature Morte opened a branch in Berlin.
Nature Morte has also organized projects and exhibitions with international artists coming to India and combined their works with those of Indian artists to foster cross-cultural dialogues. The gallery has collaborated with institutions in India such as the British Council, the Alliance Francaise, the Sanskriti Foundation, the India International Centre, the India Habitat Centre and the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Mumbai.
