Details

Nostalgia by Jiban Biswas is a series in Acrylic on Canvas. The artist's iconography are certain elements which occur in his works. These elements would regularly not be grouped together. However, Jiban's concept lies in involving these unrelated objects in his artworks giving rise to a theme. A bright backdrop with a prominent gramophone, now obsolete. A religious sentiment or a revered couple covering the holy cow, a symbol of utmost purity. A certain quirkiness with headphones on the cow or microphones enhance the unconventional theme. One can probably perceive the series as an upbeat reminder of traditions.

Jiban Biswas

Born in 1982, JibanBiswas received his Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata. Describing his creative process, the artist notes, "I cannot forget my childhood days, my village, its people, its cattle–bridge, and even the very familiar wandering bull ‘Bhola’ with its lonely eyes." "I have tried to project myself as I am and my surroundings just as they are. I have consciously rejected symbolic representation." Amongst Biswas' solo exhibitions are those held at Triveni Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2010 and 2009; and at Genesis Art Gallery, Kolkata in 2008. His works have also been featured in several group exhibitions in Chennai, London, Amsterdam, Goa, Bangalore, Kolkata, New Delhi and Mumbai. In 2003, Biswas was awarded the Ravi Jain Memorial Scholarship.
