Details

'When I felt like a mother' is inspired by a 'Gudra' (mattress) that reminds me of my mother who used to stitch together worn out clothes' cuttings / rags for her children due to lack of resources and to protect us from cold. I have used this gesture as a metaphor for showing my emotional concern over the critical loss of natural resources that in turn leaves the enormous species with limited shelters for survival , so here I , like a mother , have collected the nature's remains from all over the city of Delhi - world’s most polluted city - and have stitched them together like a mattress to give our extincting species some protection and care. I have imagined the future of these species who are on the verge of extinction and how they would look like in the future , possibly hybrids that is why the forms and shapes are unusual and unique.

Born in the village of Bihar in India, I have lived close to the land and natural environment for much of my life before moving to Delhi to study art, hence developed a deep connection with the rural life and its landscape which brings those emotional connections, observations  and nostalgia into my art. This experience and understanding of how nature "works" and its interaction with culture and corresponding structures has always been central to the sophistication and nuance of treatment to be found in each of my works. I choose sculpture – creating a negative and a positive mould, casting, pouring - as a form to portray the metaphor of reinventing extraordinary moments and relationships that otherwise pass unnoticed.

One thing that my sculptures must contain and that is the humanity of the moment. Sometimes those moments reflect my personal experiences and sometimes imaginary. My work derives its immediacy from my sustained act of looking and recording the city and the diversity of individual routines. My sculptures, whether in fiberglass, silicon or natural materials, retain a poetic, emotional, and sometimes ephemeral element.
